"An Economic Analysis of Domestic Terrorism with Deterrence"
Abstract: In the U.S., public mass shootings are a form of domestic terrorism. The perpetrators of the violence are residents of the U.S., are generally citizens—white males, who normally act alone, i.e., “lone wolfs.” His goal is to create chaos, immense emotional trauma, massive injuries and deaths, and to greatly disrupt the daily life of those going about an otherwise normal day of shopping, working, concert attendance, church worship, or school/college attendance. Although shootings in schools and houses of worship tend to stand out in our minds, they make up a relatively small portion of public mass shootings. More common are those in offices and retail establishments, such as restaurants and stores. In addition, survivors are frequently left with devastating injuries, shattered families, psychological scars and large medical bills that will follow them for the remainder of their lives. This is the reason that in much of our analysis we aggregate together the number of deaths and injuries. The economic loss for some survivors could exceed the loss of those who die instantly from the event.
