David Swenson David Swenson, associate scientist, was interviewed by Donnelle Eller, Des Moines Register, on two stories:

  • The USDA has proposed relocating the ERS and NIFA outside of USDA, and she wanted to know if this would be beneficial to ERS stakeholders and whether states should use economic development incentives to attract the agency.
  • As both candidates for governor are proposing expanded broadband as a rural development opportunity, she wanted to know whether wider access to broadband would change the pattern of rural depopulation.

Swenson also spoke with Ed Tibbetts, Quad City Times, about the primary causes of real household income gains in Iowa.

And Shelby Fleig, Des Moines Register, about what constitutes the “middle class” given a Pew Center definition for Metro Des Moines middle class incomes ranging from $24,600 to $74,000.
