Swenson: Dems smart to court voters in western Iowa

David SwensonDavid Swenson, associate scientist, was interviewed for a Jan. 18 story on Public News Service about how Democratic hopefuls are smart to reach out to voters in western Iowa, which is more rural and more Republican.

"Distribution of the population changes where you have, increasingly, older people staying because they're the ones that own the farms, they own the businesses,” says Swenson. “They have other entrenched anchors that keep 'em in that community."

Swenson was also interviewed at the ISU Alumni Center for the HBO show “Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas.” The topic concerned how well the state and its workers were prepared or will be prepared for a future economy that benefits some greatly but leaves others behind.

He talked with Francie Diep, staff writer for Pacific Standard, about the job-generating potential of the Green New Deal.

Swenson was also interviewed for a Jan. 21 story "Iowa's Sioux City stands out amid rural economic decline" in The Country Today.

“That concentration does not exist anywhere near that degree in any counties around it,” Swenson said. “They’re one of the most prosperous counties in the state of Iowa.”

And by John Tory, Columbus Dispatch. In light of Sherrod Brown visiting Iowa soon, and in light of Brown’s ardent support for both NAFTA revisions and trade sanctions against China, he was interested in the findings of the CARD report that projected revenue losses for Iowa soybean, corn, and hog producers.
