David Swenson, associate scientist, was interviewed by Jason Margolis, The World (Public Radio International), about research on the practice and prevalence of state educations systems training workers for specific employers (like John Deere or Caterpillar in the Midwest and Mercedes Benz in Alabama).

Swenson also commented on the lack of workers for job openings in the Midwest in the Wall Street Journal April 1, 2018.

David Swenson, a regional economist at Iowa State University, doesn’t believe Iowa suffers from a skills gap. More job training programs are a “solution to a problem that doesn’t exist,” he said. “Thinking that it’s going to solve rural labor issues is misguided.”

He had several interviews pertaining to China’s announcement of tariffs on U.S. goods and the potential impact on Iowa/Midwest agriculture, manufacturing, and the broader economy.
