January 18, 2019

Isabelle KelleyThe New York Times' "Overlooked" obituary series, which profiles Americans who were not appropriately celebrated in the pages of the Times at the time of their passing, this week brought readers the incredible story of Isabelle Kelley (MS '40 econ), 1917-1997.

Kelley created the federal government's Special Milk Program -- which continues to serve American schools to this day -- and what is currently known as the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP). Her work helped and continues to help feed millions.

She retired from the USDA in 1973 after 33 years of service and has been enshrined in the department's "Hall of Heroes" since 2011.
