David Keiser, assistant professor, recently published the working paper, "Consequences of the Clean Water Act and the Demand for Water Quality." This paper is part of the National Bureau of Economic Research Working Paper Series.

Catherine Kling, professor, and Wendong Zhang, assistant professor, contributed to the Business Record's "2017 Economic Forecast." Kling spoke on possible changes in the environmental regulations, and Zhang commented on the agricultural economy.
Wallace Huffman, professor, and Jonathan McFadden have had their paper "Consumer Demand for Low-Acrylamide-Forming Potato Products: Evidence from Lab Auctions" accepted for publication by the American Journal of Potato Research.
Ziran Li, Ph.D. student, is the winner of the Barbara and Thomas Lyon Scholarship for the Study of Agricultural Cooperatives for the second time.
Hyunseok Kim, Ph.D. student, has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Cathryn Jacobson Ahrenholz Scholarship.
Dean Wendy Wintersteen appointed the CALS Sustainability Task Force last year to begin a college-wide dialog on sustainability and to consider how the college can focus and more fully engage in sustainability across its teaching, research and extension missions
The Office for Responsible Research (ORR) is launching a training program this spring for faculty, staff, and students who may conduct research involving human subjects. There will be two types of training offered. The ORR will provide a standing, monthly training on the basics of navigating the approval process for research with human subjects. Additionally, the ORR will offer a 4-part series (one seminar held each quarter) that addresses different components of such research.
David Swenson, associate scientist, was interviewed by Donnelle Eller, Des Moines Register, about the proposed border tax and the impact on consumer wellbeing and on the Iowa economy and about President Trump pulling out of the TPP agreement and its impact on Iowa.

Alejandro Plastina, assistant professor, made a presentation Jan. 19th on “Managing Margins in 2017” at the 12th Farming for the Future Conference, organized by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers. The meeting was held at the Quality Inn hotel in Ames with about 100 people attending.

Daniel Phaneuf ('97 Ph.D. economics), Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with Till Requate, has published a graduate textbook, A Course in Environmental Economics - Theory, Policy, and Practice, by Cambridge University Press.
Waste Management has asked that plastic garbage bags NOT be placed in the big blue recycling bins in Heady Hall. When these bins contain plastic bags, the bin contents are considered trash and will not be accepted for recycling.
Currently Waste Management drivers have to do their best to dig through the loads and remove the plastic bags. So, with everyone's help, keeping bags out of the bins in the first place will help the entire process stay efficient and timely.
Neil Harl, emeritus professor, was quoted in the article, "Should Congress Abolish the Estate Tax?" in Wallaces Farmer.
Jan. 18th marked the grand opening of a new residence hall. Geoffroy Hall is named for President Emeritus Gregory L. Geoffroy, who led the university from 2001-2012.
Gary Macnoll (BS Ag Bus) was recently featured in the Jan. 8th Abilene Reporter-News as one of the most progressive beef cattle producers in Taylor County, Texas.

Gamma Sigma Delta Initiation is set for April 20, 2017 in 0127 Curtiss Hall.
The three Regent universities are participating in a study of faculty activity. All faculty members at the three universities will be asked to complete an online reporting form describing how they spend their work time during a randomly assigned one-week period during the semester. This information (which will be reported in the aggregate only to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa) will help the universities educate external constituencies about the wide range of important activities that comprise faculty responsibilities.
On Jan. 10, 2017, Jeri Prescott presented the James R. Prescott Scholarship in Economics to graduate students Gaurav Arora and Yang He at a reception in Heady Hall.
