Summer's gradual ramp-up is about to give way to fall's fuller return. Most employees who need to work on campus to support a successful resumption of in-person instruction and residential student life will be back in their usual workspaces by Aug. 3, the same date students begin moving into university housing. Returning to prepare for the fall semester ends a long stretch away for some employees.

There will be updates to the university travel policy, effective August 1. The per diem reimbursement is easier and faster to submit, review and approve.  Using a per diem will dramatically decrease the time it takes for a traveler to submit an expense request and the time it takes for service teams to process the request. This method allows for simplified expense planning and a predictable expense payout.

The CARD/ Department of Economics Web Hub to Track COVID-19’s Social and Economic Benefits has been accepted as an impact statement by the national Landgrant Impact Database. The web hub, in which researchers in the Department of Economics and the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development examine the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on local, regional and global economies, represents ISU–CALS’ work in response to the pandemic.

A new webpage devoted to faculty who may be planning for retirement, as well as those who are already emeritus/a, is now available on the Provost website https://www.provost.iastate.edu/faculty-and-staff-resources/emeritus-faculty-resources.

This new resources page contains an FAQ document that aims to answer many of the recurring questions that we all receive regarding retirement and emeritus/a status.

At the bottom of the document there is a link to some Scenarios/Responses & Proactive Tips that instructors, advisers, and staff might find useful.

Dr. GianCarlo MoschiniGianCarlo Moschini, professor, has received the 2020 Publication of Enduring Quality Award from the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society. The award is to recognize the article, “Modeling the pattern of structural change in US meat demand,” co-authored with Karl Meilke, which was published in 1989 in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.

Another university initiative to help employees and students stay healthy when the academic year begins is to provide hand sanitizer on campus -- lots of it. Using a map of administration and academic buildings, a team from facilities planning and management developed a plan for placing and restocking free-standing hand sanitizer dispensers in about 95 buildings.

Employees whose work either supports the student experience or needs to be done on campus for a successful fall operation should plan to return to their workspace by Aug. 3, President Wendy Wintersteen announced in a July 2 email to the Iowa State community. Supervisors should be identifying and communicating with those employees as part of their local workspace plan, which can include variables such as staggered daily start and end times or day-of-the-week rotations to accommodate physical distancing in the office.
