Beef prices to remain strong: Schulz

Lee Schulz, associate professor, was quoted in a March 26 Des Moines Register story, "Panic buying — and hoarding — drive higher prices for eggs, milk and other staples."

Schulz said the quantity of pork in cold storage is about 7.5% greater than a year earlier, contributing to lower prices for pork bellies, typically in high demand. "We have really robust stocks," he said. "That's why we're seeing weaker prices."

"This is the time of year when we do see stronger prices," primarily as Americans gear up for summer grilling, he said. So "prices should remain relatively strong."
