Dermot Hayes, professor, was quoted in a May 10 Des Moines Register story "'It can't get any worse': Iowa farmers suffer as U.S. trade war with China escalates."
Dermot Hayes, an Iowa State University agricultural economist, said the tariffs have made U.S. farm goods more expensive than its competitors' goods. "It’s hard to damage U.S. agriculture any more than it already has because the duties in place are already prohibitive," Hayes said.
Hayes was also quoted in a May 11 story in Washington Post e-Replica Newspapers in Education titled "African swine fever runs rampant in China; U.S. on alert."
“I don’t believe the Chinese have it under control at this point, and the virus can last for months in refrigerated pork products,” Hayes said. “Our risk increases as more and more of the population around the rest of the globe has some swine fever. ”
