Renowned political scientist, Shanto Iyengar is one of the top researchers in the world in the area of American affective polarization. Shanto’s research shows how Republicans and Democrats not only disagree more strongly than ever on policy issues, but they like and trust each other less, as well. He has argued that feeling negatively toward members of the other party can lead partisans to act in a discriminatory manner. Tessa Ditonto and David Andersen, both faculty from political science, and Sher Asad and Joydeep Bhattacharya from economics are currently exploring the effect of partisan polarization—and concomitant prejudice toward out-partisans—on economic behaviors.
