Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barcelo: Faculty as Strategic Agents of Institutional Change

Description: Dr. Barceló has served in various higher ed administrative positions for the past 30 years including serving as President of Northern New Mexico College as well as in her current role as Special Assistant for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to the Chancellor of the University of Illinois.  Dr. Barceló has numerous publications, including Chicana/Latina Studies: The Journal of Mujeres Activas, and most recently, a book chapter on diversity and institutional transformation in universities.  She is a widely-known national speaker and has been recognized with many awards, including the NACCS (National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies) Scholar Award in 2012.

In her workshop, Dr. Barceló’ will share her professional journey as a Chicana administrator, then focus her attention on how diversity alters our conversations and transforms how we teach, learn, and know.  This is an interactive workshop with opportunities for discussion and sharing.  Attendees will learn practical strategies to take back to their departments.
