Ron Deiter, professor, was interviewed by Mike Burvee (former student and ISU grad) for a story in the Jan. 30, 2019 Sigourney News-Review titled "Iowa could join progression against illegal sports betting."
“I think the main concern that most people would have with legalizing sports betting is the extent to which it would create issues for individuals who bet more than they can afford to lose on this form of entertainment. If it causes individual financial stress, it could contribute to more broken homes and families,” Iowa State Economics Professor Ronald Deiter said. “This is why we need to look at the ‘net’ societal gain, hopefully, in terms of added entertainment and enjoyment. Some gambling tax receipts in Iowa are currently used to fund programs to help individuals with gambling problems so the source of the problem can also help to be a cure.”
