China trade talk is a positive

Dr. Chad HartChad Hart, associate professor, was quoted in a WHOTV.com story, "ISU Professor Breaks Down Tentative Trade Deal with China," Oct.14 on the China trade agreement announced this week.

Chad Hart is an associate professor of economics at Iowa State University and a crop markets specialist. He is also a partner in "Farm Risk," a firm that develops insurance products for farmers. He said it's hard to determine the impact of the deal until all the details are hammered out.

Hart was also quoted in an Oct. 16 FactCheck.Org post titled, "Trump Wrong on U.S. Agriculture Exports to China."

Hart said he is cautiously optimistic about the president’s direct involvement in the trade talks — a possible sign that there will be a deal this time after several false starts in a trade war that has driven down U.S. agricultural exports to China. But, he added, the impact on farmers won’t be known for quite some time. “The real devil here will be in the details,” he said.

Dr. Wendong ZhangWendong Zhang, assistant professor, was interviewed on the trade agreement on Iowa Public Radio's Morning Edition Oct. 14.

It’s not clear whether the new proposed number reflects an annual promise, or total purchase over some other period of time, says Wendong Zhang, an agriculture economist at Iowa State University.

“The Chinese probably left more wiggle room,” he says. “There’s a really big number, but there’s no timeframe tied to it.”
