China agreement could override tariff damage: Hayes

Dr. Dermot HayesDermot Hayes, professor, was quoted in an April 7 The Daily Iowan article about the lack of progress with trade negotiations with China.

Dermot Hayes, an Iowa State University economics professor and coauthor of the September report, said the Iowa senators are correct that there could be a potential agreement with China that would override the damage done by tariffs.

“I do believe that Sen. Ernst is right in that regard,” Hayes said. “Just as soon as the agreement is signed, I think China will announce pretty large purchases of corn, soybeans, and pork.”


A study headed up by Hayes was also cited in an April 11 Messenger story, "There was too much at risk," about the National Pork Producers Council canceling the 2019 World Pork Expo:

Just look at the staggering loss projections estimated through studies led by Dr. Dermot Hayes, an Iowa State University economist, Center for Agricultural and Rural Development Food and Agriculture Policy Research Institute:
$8 billion: The estimated amount the United States would lose in pork commodity revenue in the first year of an ASF outbreak.
$4 billion: The estimated amount the United States would lose in corn commodity revenue in the first year of an ASF outbreak.
$1.5 billion: The estimated amount the United States would lose in soybean commodity revenue in the first year of an ASF outbreak.
