There is no question that in the current environment, educational institutions are vying to attract and retain students. Iowa State University has had considerable success when compared to its peers.
Bertan Turhan, assistant professor, presented his paper titled "How to De-reserve Reserves" (joint with Orhan Aygün) at the inter-university online seminar series CARE-Colloquium organized by the Economics Department of University of Kansas on Feb. 19.
Mark Edelman, emeritus professor, has had his journal article, "Extension-Led Demonstration: Grameen Microfinance Methods and Capital Access for Low-Income Female Entrepreneurs," accepted for publication and is in press by Clemson University Press for the Journal of Extension.
David Swenson, research scientist, was recently interviewed by:
John Steppe, Cedar Rapids Gazette, about the condition of the Iowa ethanol industry and its future prospects.
Linh Ta, Axios, about the economic impacts of ethanol production in Iowa and the issues the industry faces with the Biden Administration.
Wendong Zhang, assistant professor, made a zoom presentation Feb.18 for the American Farm Bureau Federation on the impacts of ad hoc federal government payments on commodity and land markets. The Student Government and Election Commission are working to encourage more students campuswide to run for a Student Government position this spring semester. We encourage students to run who want to make an impact at their university. Students have the opportunity to run for a senatorial position to represent Iowa State University’s student body.

Steven Zumbach ('80 PhD economics) was the featured speaker at the Feb. 17 Econ Club meeting. He retired from Des Moines law firm Belin McCormick in December 2020 after four decades of service.

Burton English ('81 Ph.D. ag economics), professor at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA), has earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southern Agricultural Economics Association (SAEA).
Zackery Leist, a senior triple majoring in ag business, economics, and international agriculture and minoring in agronomy, is one of seven outstanding seniors at Iowa State who was selected to receive the 2021 Wallace E. Barron All-University Senior Award from the ISU Alumni Association Awards Review and Selection Committee.
Lee Schulz, associate professor, was quoted in the Feb. 10 Successful Farming story, "2021 is an economic game changer for farmers."

The American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE) board is considering starting a mentoring program for midcareer minority economists for the academic year of 2021-2022.
The goal of this program is to provide mentoring support to midcareer minority economists who in the next 2-3 years would like to apply for:
- full professor
- a leadership position at an academic institution
- a leadership position at a non-academic institution
Through this program:
A paper by Joydeep Bhattacharya, professor, has been published by the Journal of Mathematical Economics. "A rational-choice model of Covid-19 Transmission with endogenous quarantining and two-sided prevention," was coauthored by Shankha Chakraborty and Xiumei Yu. Yu was a pre-doc in the economics department last year.
The Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021-22 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Academy (ELA). The Emerging Leaders Academy fosters and enhances leadership development of faculty and P&S staff currently serving in leadership roles, or those who aspire to such positions. ELA is offered annually to a select cohort of current and future institutional leaders. During the academic year, the ELA cohort participates in monthly leadership activities led by content experts and facilitators.
Chad Hart, professor, was interviewed for a Feb. 5 Iowa Farmer Today story, "Recent U.S. trade agreements pay off."
The 2021 Women in Economics Symposium will be a virtual event, held 6-8 p.m. Central on Feb. 17 and 18, 2021.
This event is for high school students, college students, educators and anyone curious about the economics profession.
Wendong Zhang, assistant professor, and Chad Hart, professor, have a new publication, "The impacts of interest rate changes on US Midwest farmland values," at Agricultural Finance Review. This is a joint work with MS graduate Albulena Basha, and is built on her master thesis.
