Jacobs: local co-ops deal with farm economy

“The thinking is that (the strong balance sheets) will sustain them through a down period in agriculture,” says Keri Jacobs.

There are several trends in the cooperative industry in Iowa and other Midwestern states. And there are some trends which have run their course.

"One obvious trend is the move toward consolidation," Jacobs says. "Local cooperatives around the country have been merging and combining forces, and that isn’t anything new. It’s been happening since the beginning of time."
