County Livestock Summary for Iowa from the 2002 Census of Agriculture
  • County livestock data were released June 3 by USDA.  The following maps provide a quick glance of the number of animals and operations in Iowa for:
    • Beef Cows, Fed Cattle Sold, Hogs Sold, Dairy Cows, Sheep, Layers and Turkeys

Beef Cows
  • Iowa reported 987,670 beef cows in 2002
    • 10 counties accounted for 23% of the state herd
    • 20 counties accounted for 40%
    • Some counties didn’t report inventories due to confidentiality restrictions.
  • Compared to 1997
    • 25 counties gained inventory, 10% average gain
    • 52 counties lost inventory, 11% average loss
    • 3 counties didn’t change
    • 19 counties did not report

Fed Cattle Marketings
  • Iowa reported selling 1,806,291 fed cattle in 2002
    • 10 counties accounted for 39% of the state herd
    • 20 counties accounted for 56%
    • Half the cattle are in western most 26 counties
  • Compared to 1997
    • The state increased marketings 13%
    • 66 counties increased sales, 66% average increase
    • 33 counties decreased sales, 17% average decrease

Milk Cows
  • Iowa reported 206,965 milk cows in 2002
    • 10 counties accounted for 64% of the state herd
    • 20 counties accounted for 80%
    • Some counties didn’t report inventories due to confidentiality restrictions.

  • Iowa reported 15,486,531 hogs in 2002
