Borges

Aceites Borges Pont S.A. is a vertically integrated packer of fine quality oils, mainly olive oil.  The headquarters are based in Tarrega, Spain, which is located in Catalonia about 20 miles west of Lleida.  The company has roots all the way back to 1896 when Borges S.A. was founded, and the company has been bottling under the Borges name since 1964.

Borges is the leading Spanish exporter of olive oil, accounting for 27% of the Spanish olive oil exports.  Most of these exports go to Italy, although Borges exports to over 80 countries.  Borges exports have increased significantly since the acquisition of Star Fine Foods, Inc. from Fresno, California in 1995.  Borges now markets its olive oil and other edible oils in the United States under the Star name, which is the leading brand of olive oil in the state of California.

In addition to the main olive oil products, Borges also processes sunflower oil, grapeseed oil, and corn oil. After the processing of these oils, Borges sells both the oil and the meal by-product of the process.  Oil extraction is done both mechanically with presses and chemically with hexane solvent.  To monitor the processes and the end oil products, Borges maintains a test lab that samples and grades each batch of oil that is processed by the main plant.  The pictures below show the main processing facility, as well as some students sampling olive oil in the test lab.
