Actel

Actel is a second-degree fruit processing cooperative in Northern Spain.  It is made up of 130 smaller cooperatives of farmers that supply fruit to Actel.  The primary purpose of Actel is to process and market members’ fruit products.  The 130 cooperatives that make up Actel involve a grand total of 15,000 families involved in the production and processing of various fruit products.

There are several different departments within Actel, including fruits, cereals, and other inputs.  Although fruits make up the majority of Actel’s business, cereals and other inputs also have a large impact.  The main facility at the Actel headquarters packages all of the fruit sold.  Of this fruit, one-third are apples, one-third are pears, and one-third are stone fruits (fruits with large seeds in the middle), such as peaches, almonds, etc.

Like most other agricultural firms, Actel is currently facing a changing agricultural market for its goods.  Among the innovations in product marketing that Actel has used recently are ready-to-eat fruits and a move toward smaller fruits.  Actel is Spain’s largest exporter of fresh fruits, with most exports going to Eastern Europe.  The picture below shows some of the packaged pears ready to be shipped.
