C
Campbell, Brad
In regards to the question you pose: What have you (I) done since ISU? Dr's Johnson, Helmuth, and other great people at CARD were instrumental in allowing me, and eventually my father, to work in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) in 1991. Since then I have used the knowledge gained at ISU (theoretical), and Father (practical) to build the Soybean industry in Ukraine of the FSU. To quote the Cheif soybean breeder at the head Agricultural University in Ukraine, «In theory we knew how to grow soybeans, and their great benefits for livestock and humans. However, you (Brad) were the only one who was ever able to put the whole system and industry together.».
This involved determining a system of production based on their conditions and level of (in)advancement, and than demonstrating, educating, supplying inputs/ getting access to western inputs for producers, crop scouting, financing all this, and subsequently bringing in a grain buyer and also helping to arrange the purchase and export to Europe (hence the source of foreign currency for imports, and access to foreign currency for common businessman), until Ukrainians could afford to keep, process, and utilize soybeans locally. And involved using our monopoly input powers to intervene in the output market at times to keep the output market price at reasonable levels for producers. Two times we doubled the price to soybean producers through out Ukraine when soybean crop buyers started to collude in driving prices back down.
We started on 100 acres and grew to include about 80 % of total soybeans grown in Ukraine with the varieties and the system of production we started here. Further, soybeans were a source of hard currency that allowed the start of independant agricultural input suppliers, and were a source of foriegn currency as payment for the big Western agricultural input suppliers. For example: American Cyanamid Company (producers of Pursuit herbicide) - did their own market study whereby it was shown as 75% of their total sales in Ukraine went to our project.
The soybean industry had tremendous financial and economic impacts as the first real cash crop. As it was the beginning of the end of the stranglehold of the state oligarch/crooks had in using their quasi-state powers and financial controls for determining the miserable prices and exchange for producers. How they could continue to take 100's of millions of dollars from people who could not feed themselves attests perhaps to their morality. I personally could not do it - even when faced with the opportunity. Soybeans as a cash crop were about releasing the currency constraints, and getting finance, choices and alternatives to Agricultural producers and suppliers. And the improved effieciency that goes with such options. As well as improvements in getting to reletively more competitive input and output markets and more competition in the surrounding general equilibruim markets . Also allowing the US and other import/ exporting companies the ability to get away from these oligarchs. Further, the direct contribution to GDP of our project has been significant – over $1 for every person in this country. In a country where the average salary was about $40 per month for many of the years we have been here.
In reality, none of this would have been even remotely possible had it not been for the lessons from ISU Economics and the graduate level PhD. classes I took. Including my experiences at CARD and ISU Economic Extension work. It has allowed me to categorize, analyze, and understand events in an economic framework and understand what Ukraine is doing as a country, as well as in businesses, the choices made, tax structures, and in what direction this economy and country is going. As well as be able to consider information from a logic standpoint (from Dr. Lapan's courses). I have been able to personally understand and forecast events that has allowed us to survive, and grow this beneficial industry despite going through - 2 hyperinflations in this country, 3 completely new currencies, working in a barter economy, with corresponding exchange rate fluctuations, and a new Constitution – the basis of law, not to mention the everyday business problems, and in working in a foriegn country where nothing works. We were also originators in Ukraine of 2 laws/ decrees based on economics, that were passed in order to get finance and incentives into agricultural production. We were here at the break up of the Soviet Union and today am the longest US agriculturalist still here.
However, the Soviet cannibilistic mentality continues. Unfortunately, today Ukraine has become a criminal state with corruption at all levels. But perhaps, and most importantly, in the law enforcement and judicial branch. What this means in reality is that government authorities (police, prosecutors, and judges) have combined with, and taken over as bandits. As such they are selling individuals human rights, civil rights, and your property. And in many cases your very existence. Unfortunately, I have become one of the victims of such, and even more unfortunately can speak from first hand knowledge))). I guess I needed a few PhD. classes on how to deal with the corruption of state powers)). So the challenge for now is for establishing basic human rights, and the rule of law in my little area. And than Stateside. Hopefully in time for the football season - unfortunately, I don't know which one yet. Feel free to use any part of this letter for your newsletter, and please tell Arne Hallam hello from me. I still have nightmares about his 24 hour final exam in Production Economics))). Take care. After graduating from ISU in 1971 I went on to earn a Ph.D. in economics at the University of North Carolina -- Chapel Hill (1978). I taught at Cornell University (Dept. of Consumer Economics and Housing), receiving tenure in 1983. But the lure of "real world" was too great. I left Cornell to become the Chief Economist at Freddie Mac and in 1987 moved to San Diego to head manage the portfolio of a $13 billion saving and loan institution. After that experiment failed I turned to consulting and have been able to create a practice specialized in the analysis of international mortgage markets. Along the way I have taught at the University of California -- San Diego, San Diego State University and in the International Housing Finance Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. All owing to the good start in economics from ISU!

I am now officially three months into my job, and I think I have finally reached the point where I am doing more work than asking questions. I am enjoying working on RV insurance, but since it is in the implementation phase, sometimes the hours can get a little long. I can’t complain, I have a job that challenges me mentally every day.
I have even had the opportunity to take a few field trips for work ¬two to Forest City, Iowa, to see the Winnebago factory and the Winnebago-Itasca Travelers rally (1400+ motor homes on the Winnebago rally grounds); and a third field trip to the State Fair to walk through towable campers. I might even get to travel out of state later this year to attend an RV trade show.
Outside work, it has still been a busy summer. I’m at that age where everyone I know decides to get hitched. My girlfriend’s sister has her wedding on Saturday and I’ve got a couple more left after that before the year is done.
Simhauser, Val
Although I don't work in the economics field, I find that my study of economics at Iowa State has been a great preparation for my legal career. I was in private law practice for almost 20 years, but currently work as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois. I continue to reside in Springfield, Illinois, my birthplace.
I'm afraid my sons heard too many stories of winter in Ames from me and their mother, who is an ISU alumna. One went to the University of Illinois, where he received his BA in economics in 2004, and now works as a bank credit officer, and the other is starting his senior year in construction management at Purdue.

I returned to North Dakota after many years in New York and California. I have been driving a tanker semi for seven years and find it very satisfying. I stay well informed through my laptop and cellphone as well as public radio. I highly recommend it for older, active workers.
Harl, Neil E.
I've been told by knowledgeable hands that retirement should not be a time of full employment but my experience has been otherwise. Publishing, running seminars, consulting and some expert witnessing (plus some time spent farming) have kept me fully employed and off the streets. But we have found time for our grandchildren . . . and our dear cat, Valentine (whom some of you may have seen being spirited into Room 381 as I checked the mail and messages). We're placing the finishing touches on a condominium in Denver where our two sons live -- to have more time with our four grandsons. We're on the 18th floor of Park Lane with a great view of the mountains so stop by when you're in that part of the world.

Hilton, Jim
We have a group who were in
the doctoral program together in the late fifties who meet for about a week every two years at
different locations throughout the country. We meet on odd years and so have called ourselves
the Iowa State "Oddities." The names of the couples and the states in which they live are as
follows: Don and Alice Rohdy (California), Jim and Ann Martin (Alabama), Vern and Maurita
McKee (Florida), Norm and Eloise Landgren (Nebraska), Glenn and Marion Roehrkasse (Wyoming),
and Jim Hilton and Christine Peters (South Carolina). We have had a lot fun over the years
(started getting together in 1991) and assume there are others who were in graduate school
together who have done the same. As probably is the case for most graduates of Iowa State, we have fond memories and enjoy talking about our time at Iowa State each time we meet.

I still work for Black & Veatch
(B&V) and recently took up a one-year assignment with
B&V to support business development activities and
existing energy projects in Jakarta, Indonesia. I
travel quite a bit to SE Asia before this assignment
that my boss decided for me to be stationed in
Indonesia to be closer to our clients and develop our
business within the region. I still keep a residence
in Grandview, MO, which is a suburb of Kansas City.
I got married about three years ago to Connie Sartore,
whom I met in Kansas City. Connie is a graduate of
University of Kansas majoring in music (Cello) and
teaches cello lessons to students privately at home.
She used to play professionally for the Topeka
Symphony but quit a few years ago due to their
demanding travel schedules.
Then our daughter, Mary Joanne-Sukmawati, was born on
May 24, 2006 at Menorah Hospital in Overland Park, KS.
So she is about a year and 3 months now. Mary has just
started walking about 2 months ago and my wife already
keeps her busy with a music class and a toddler
swimming class.
My one-year assignment is going to be a challenge for
me personnaly being away from my family. We will see
how things will work out. B&V does provide a good
relocation package that pays airline tickets for
families to go overseas. My plan is to return to the
US for a few weeks in the summer and in December.

I am the Labor Market Information Director for Washington State (every state has one -- Iowa's is Paulette Day from the Iowa Workforce development Agency). My organization has recently been given some funding by the state legislature to conduct program evaluation studies for our agency (WA Employment Security Department). We envision some experimental design studies, and more often, quasi-experiments, using state of the art econometric adjustments for selection and other bias. This is very exciting from a public policy perspective. Nonetheless, I am looking for several well-trained economists with an ineterst in applied work to staff this evaluation center.
