Narrative:

Primary research interests are in international and national grain markets including prices, structural characteristics, quality and/or grading standards, and risk management issues. Recent research projects include simulating grain marketing hedging and options strategies to estimate profit and risk levels for eastern and western Cornbelt producers, determining using a discriminate analysis, the set of personal and economic variables that describe the characteristics of the options pilot program participants and nonparticipants, analyzing Ohio's basis patterns and forward price opportunities, and analyzing the functional relationship between soybean prices and the protein and oil content (value) of soybeans.

Extension is focused on state, national, and international grain marketing issues including the expansion of exports, the enhancement of profits for the producer, merchandiser, and processor sectors, and the discovery and use of innovative teaching methods. A basis and price database is maintained; futures, options, and cash markets theories and principles are emphasized; and supporting economic theories are examined. The program is a blend of applied and theoretical applications. Innovative teaching methods include delivery via television, video, Data Transmission Network, letter study, computer-PowerPoint video applications, and off-campus classes for credit.
