"Insuring Iowa's Agriculture" is the title of a one-day workshop sponsored by the Department of Economics Extension team, geared toward crop insurance agents and providers. The workshop, in its 11th year, is scheduled for Tuesday, November 1, and will focus on the latest innovations in crop insurance.

Renewable Fuel Standard examined by Miranowski and biofuels committee

John Miranowski (left) recently served on the Committee on Economic and Environmental Impacts of Increasing Biofuels Production, appointed by The National Research Council at the request of the US Congress. The committee included 18 individuals from universities, consulting firms, and companies around the United States with expertise in biofuel production.


The committee was asked to provide and independent assessment of the economic and environmental consequences associated with achieving the RFS by 2022. Their report entitled "Renewable Fuel Standard: Potential Economic and Environmental Effects of US Biofuel Policy," concludes that the US is unlikely to meet the Renewable Fuel Standard by 2022, and that environmentally the standard may not be effective in addressing global greenhouse-gas emissions.

Slovenian Ambassador Roman Kirn to present lecture on global financial crisis

Slovenian Ambassador to the US, Roman Kirn, will present a lecture entitled "Slovenia, the European Union, and the Global Financial Crisis," on Friday, October 14 at 10 AM in the South Ballroom, Memorial Union.

His Excellency Roman Kirn is Ambassador of Slovenia to the United States, a position he has held since May 2009. He will discuss how Slovenia, after twenty years of independence, has shaped its role in the European Union and the global economy. Ambassador Kirn most recently served as Director of the Department for North and Latin America and the Caribbean for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as the head of Transatlantic Relations and Preparations for the EU-U.S. Summit during Slovenia's European Union presidency in June 2008.
