Orazem earns Nobel Laureate approval for his education plan at Copenhagen Consensus

Peter Orazem, a University Professor of economics at ISU, authored four of the top 15 strategies cited by a panel of leading economists, including four Nobel laureates, at the global Copenhagen Consensus 2012 last month. Orazem's recommendations were on how to improve education in the developing world. The panel was charged with answering the question, "If you had $75 billion to spend over the next four years and your goal was to advance human welfare, how could you get the most value for your money?" Yu Jin graduated from ISU with a Phd in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a position as assistant professor at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, in the School of Economics, Shanghai. The new position will start in September, and his research focus will be on financial economics and macroeconomics.

Hang Qian has graduated from ISU with a PhD in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a position with MathWorks, a company that produces the MATLAB software. He will develop new features in their econometric modeling tools, and maintain their econometric toolbox software.

Bo Xiong graduated from ISU with a Phd in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a one-year postdoctoral position at the University of California, Davis, in the Department of Agriculture & Resource Economics (in conjunction with the California Agricultural Issues Center). His new position will start in June, and his research focus will be on agricultural policy related to trade.


Murali Kuchibhotla graduated from ISU with a PhD in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a position with Brandeis University as an institutional research analyst, and will start in July.


Jingbo Cui graduated from ISU with a PhD in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a one-year postdoctoral position at ISU, working under GianCarlo Moschini. His research focus will expand the work from his dissertation on energy and biofuels.


Nate Kauffman graduated from ISU with a PhD in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a research position as an economist with the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank in Omaha, Nebraska. His research will focus on commodity markets.

CARD study shows impact of ethanol on pump prices

CARD logoA recent fuel price analysis, conducted by ISU’s Center for Agriculture and Rural Development, found that pump prices would be $1.69 more per gallon across the Midwest if ethanol wasn’t available. This $1.69 per gallon reduction adds up to $2,363 in annual savings for a typical Iowa family.
