Farmland rental rates increase moderately in 2013, says Edwards

Rental rates for Iowa farmland have been pushed significantly higher by the favorable corn and soybean prices that farmers have enjoyed since 2010. This trend continued in 2013, but the rate of increase slowed considerably.

Results from the most recent survey of farmland rental rates carried out by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach showed that the average estimated cash rent for corn and soybean land in the state for 2013 was $270 per acre, an increase of $18 per acre or 7% from last year. This compares to increases of 16% in 2011 and 18% in 2012. Lower crop yields due to prolonged dry weather and lower price forecasts for the 2013 crop have tempered the optimism about prospective profits.

Student Affairs honors Hallam and Luvaga

Department of Economics faculty members Arne Hallam and Ebby Luvaga were recently honored by the Division of Student Affairs at Iowa State University.

Hallam, associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and a professor of economics, received the Thomas B. Thielen Award. This award is the highest honor the division gives to a faculty member who has been a strong supporter of student success.

The Thomas B. Thielen Award is named for the man who served as Iowa State University's Vice President for Student Affairs from 1977-1997. Under the twenty years of Dr. Thielen's leadership, the Division of Student Affairs enjoyed national prominence, and ISU students thrived in a tradition of involvement in campus events, issues, and organizations.

Luvaga, a senior lecturer in economics, coordinator of the agricultural business learning community and leader of numerous study abroad programs, received the Wilbur L. Layton Faculty Recognition Award. Typically this award is given to faculty members who have a sustained relationship with the Division of Student Affairs.

Victor Aguirregabiria is a professor in the Department of Economics and the University of Toronto and a CEMFI Research Fellow. He is currently associate editor of Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and Journal of Applied Econometrics. Victor's research has made important advances to the econometric estimation of dynamic structural models of economic behavior. His work has appeared in Econometrica, the American Economic Review, Review of Economic Studies, Journal of Econometrics, and other influential journals.

Cardinal Key award for Deiter

Ron Deiter, professor in the Department of Economics, and undergraduate ag business majors Bethany Olson and William Riley were recently honored with Iowa State University’s Cardinal Key Award.

The award was established in 1926, to honor outstanding leaders among students, faculty, and staff at the university. Awardees demonstrate exemplary leadership in university activities, a high level of scholarship, strength of character, and outstanding service to the university community. The Cardinal Key designation also serves to identify a unifying body of campus leaders who promote “cardinal virtues” within the university community.

Harl awarded Order of the Knoll

Neil Harl, emeritus professor with the Department of Economics, was recently presented the Faculty and Staff Order of the Knoll award through Iowa State.

The award recognizes an individual or couple currently employed by or retired from Iowa State, who has provided dedicated and long-term professional and volunteer service and creative leadership to the ISU Foundation and university through the advancement of philanthropy.

Duffy honored by American Agricultural Editors’ Association

Mike Duffy will be presented the Distinguished Service Award this summer by the American Agricultural Editors’ Association.

“Mike’s leadership in helping beginning farmers for nearly 20 years has helped to facilitate the transfer and transition of farm operations between multiple generations,” said Dan Zinkand, an agricultural journalist and AAEA member who led Duffy’s nomination effort.
