  • New baby boy for Ann Johanns

    Ann Johanns, Extension & Outreach program specialist, gave birth to Spencer Joseph Johanns on May 28 at 7:37am. He weighs 9 lbs 5.5 oz., and is 21 inches long. Congratulations from the department on the latest addition to the Johanns family!

  • Calhoun uses statistical analysis to make sports projections

    With 24-hour sports networks and social media, there is no shortage of sports information and statistics for fans to access. But a desire for better analysis of those statistics led Gray Calhoun, assistant professor in the Department of Economics, to create VisualScoreboard.com.

    The website is designed to give fans a breakdown of the game and make projections on future matchups through statistical analysis. VisualScoreboard.com is far from the typical stat sheet fans might find on their favorite sports page. Calhoun creates statistical graphs to visually represent scoring during a game. Each mark on the graph illustrates the difference in the score between the two teams.

  • Phi Beta Kappa awardees

    Three Department of Economics undergrads were distinguished as Phi Beta Kappa awardees for 2013. They include, Prasad Raman, an economics and aerospace engineering major from Eden Prairie, Minnesota; and Stephen and Philip Herr, brothers who both are economics and math majors from Fontanelle, Iowa.

    Eighty-six students from Iowa State University were initiated into Phi Beta Kappa at a ceremony on May 5, 2013. Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776, is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary society. It recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement in a broad curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences.

    Agri-Pulse Communications Inc., a national media resource for the latest agricultural policy news and commentary, selected a Point-Counterpoint Column titled "Ag Committee Farm Bill Comparisons" co-authored by Mark Edelman, ISU Community Vitality Center director, and Barry Flinchbaugh, Kansas State University, for its website and newsletter distribution.
