Announcements

  • National Science Foundation communications workshop opportunity

The National Science Foundation (NSF) will be holding a workshop, "Science: Becoming the Messenger" on October 16, 2012, at the Gateway Hotel & Conference Center at Iowa State University, 2100 Green Hills Drive, Ames, Iowa 50014. We are extending an invitation to principal investigators (PI), early career researchers and engineers, students and postdocs from institutions and universities in Iowa who would like to learn to communicate effectively to a broad audience.

We are also extending an invitation to public information officers (PIO) communicating on behalf of the institutions and universities in Iowa.

Today, across academia and the research community, there is a growing interest in science communication. Scientists are asking how they can share their knowledge and findings across an increasingly challenging information environment.

News

  • Hart predicts rise in 2013 grocery prices

Americans can expect to pay more for groceries due to high commodity prices driven by this year’s drought, but food prices likely won’t hit their peak for a few months. Corn prices have soared throughout the summer due to the historic drought that has withered much of the nation’s prime farmland, which has driven up feed costs for livestock and poultry producers. Those high prices will be passed onto consumers in the form of increased costs at the grocery store, but it will take between six and nine months for those increases to show up on store shelves.

  • NCR-SARE Announces 2013 Farmer Rancher Grant Call for Proposals

The 2013 North Central Region - Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (NCR-SARE) Farmer Rancher Grant Call for Proposals is now available.

Farmers and ranchers in the North Central Region are invited to submit grant proposals to explore sustainable agriculture solutions to problems on the farm or ranch. Proposals should show how farmers and ranchers plan to use their own innovative ideas to explore sustainable agriculture options and how they will share project results. Sustainable agriculture is good for the environment, profitable, and socially responsible.

Projects should emphasize research or education/demonstration. There are three types of competitive grants: individual grants ($7,500 maximum), partner grants for two farmers/ranchers from separate operations who are working together ($15,000 maximum), and group grants for three or more farmers/ranchers from separate operations who are working together ($22,500 maximum). NCR-SARE expects to fund about 45 projects in the twelve-state North Central Region with this call. A total of approximately $400,000 is available for this program. Grant recipients have 25 months to complete their projects.

Interested applicants can find the call for proposals online as well as useful information for completing a proposal at http://www.northcentralsare.org/Grants/Types-of-Grants/Farmer-Rancher-Gr.... You can find more information about sustainable agriculture at http://www.sare.org/ or take a free National Continuing Education Program online course about the basic concepts at http://www.sare.org/Learning-Center/Courses-and-Curricula.

Proposals are due on Thursday, November 29th at 4:30 p.m. at the NCR-SARE office in Saint Paul, MN.

Potential applicants with questions can contact Joan Benjamin, Associate Regional Coordinator and Farmer Rancher Grant Program Coordinator, at jbenjami@umn.edu or 573-681-5545 or 800-529-1342. A hard copy or an emailed copy of the call for proposals is also available by contacting Joan Benjamin. We make revisions to our calls for proposals each year, which means it is crucial to use the most recent call for proposals.

Each state in SARE's North Central Region has one or more State Sustainable Agriculture Coordinators who can provide information and assistance to potential grant applicants. Interested applicants can find their State Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator online at http://www.northcentralsare.org/State-Programs.

  • NSF workshop on pre-award topics

The National Science Foundation and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) will be holding a one-day workshop on Thursday, November 8, 2012. This workshop is primarily designed for researchers and educators less experienced in proposing to the NSF; however, more experienced proposers and NSF grantees may well find the workshop useful and informative. It is our hope that events such as this will stimulate new interest in NSF programs at institutions that have not been among our traditional customers, as well as at premier research institutions. We want to extend an invitation to you and to anyone else at your institution who would like to attend this workshop and learn more about the NSF and its programs.

The workshop will provide an overview of the Foundation, its mission, priorities, and budget. It will cover the NSF proposal and merit review process and NSF programs that cut across disciplines. Additionally, representatives from the seven NSF directorates and the Office of International Science and Engineering and the Office of Integrative Activities will make presentations on their programs and will also be available informally and in breakout sessions for discussions of potential research proposals.

The workshop will be held at the Nebraska Union on the City Campus of UNL. There is a registration fee of $35.00 for this workshop. You can register on NSF web site at http://www.nsf.gov/events/event_summ.jsp?cntn_id=125337&org=NSF. Please register by Thursday, November 1, 2012. The registration fee may be paid the day of the workshop or prior to the workshop by check payable to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and mailed to:

  • New opportunities and awards at ARER Journal

As editors of Agricultural and Resource Economics Review (ARER), we are excited to share with you information about four new opportunities at the journal. These changes were approved by the NAREA Board of Directors earlier this summer and we believe that these will help the continued growth and influence of the journal:

Special Expedited Review for Papers Co-Authored by Graduate Students. In recognition of the challenges that the lengthy publication process of most economic journals pose in getting high quality articles published when they are co-authored by graduate students, the ARER editors have established an expedited review process for manuscripts submitted that include graduate students as co-authors. The process is designed to take less than four months from submission to final decision. For example, a paper that is submitted at the start of a semester could go through the entire review process before the semester ends. The three-step process works as follows.

Upon submission, the manuscript will undergo an expedited review such that the authors will receive a decision and reviews within two months (60 days). The review process will have the same rigor as other ARER submissions.

If requested for a revision, authors will then be asked to complete their revisions and response to reviewers within 45 days.

Upon receipt of the revised manuscript, the ARER editor will make a decision on whether to publish the paper or not based on its current condition. In other words, there will not be a second or third round of revisions.

Authors wanting to be considered for this expedited review process should indicate a preference for the “Special Expedited Review” in the box entitled “Brief Comments/Instructions to Editor” that is part of the ARER on-line submission process and in the cover letter to the editors.

ARER Young Scholar award. Starting in 2013, the ARER Young Scholar award will be given annually to the graduate student who co-authored the best paper in ARER in the preceding year. The ARER Young Scholar award includes a $1,000 and will be given out each year at the NAREA annual conference. To be eligible, the graduate students can be listed anywhere in the author list order, however, preference will be given to publications where the significant contributions of the graduate student are reflected in the author ordering.

ARER Advisor award. Starting in 2013, the ARER Advisor award will be given annually to the faculty advisor of the graduate student who won the ARER Young Scholar award for co-authoring the best paper in ARER that year.

ARER Fellows award. The ARER Fellows award is for authors who have demonstrated sustained excellence in research and commitment to the association’s journal. The ARER Fellows award is given to authors who have published five or more peer-reviewed articles in Agricultural and Resource Economics Review or under the journal’s former name Journal of the Northeastern Agricultural Economics Council. This group of ARER Fellows represents less than 1% of the total number of authors who have published in these journals.

Finally, we wanted to let you know that starting in 2013, ARER will be lowering its page fees to $65 per page (previously the fee has been $75 per page). This change will also coincide with a new look journal intended to make the journal easier to read by electronic devices.

We are happy to answer any of your questions regarding these four new opportunities and we look forward to receiving your submissions to ARER.
