- Welcome to Nathan Cook, CARD Communications Specialist
The department wishes to welcome Nathan Cook, CARD Communications Specialist. Nathan is a 2009 graduate of ISU with a degree in technical communications. He previously worked at the Nevada Journal as a reporter. "This feels like a good fit for my degree," he said. "I'm excited to be here."

The department wishes to welcome Ioannis "Yiannis" Panagopoulos, CARD Postdoc Research Associate. Ioannis received his PhD in hydrology and water reserve management from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He will be working under Cathy Kling and Philip Gassman for the next year and a half on river basin management.

- Congratulations to Shane Ellis on birth of son
Congratulations to Shane Ellis and his wife Camille on the birth of their son Ryker Oak Ellis.Ryker was born Monday, May 21, weighing in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces, 20.5 inches. He joins Ellis's three other children Tyconder, Emmarae, and Stetson. Many happy wishes to the growing Ellis family! - Farewell to Jackie Garreau

- Orazem earns Nobel Laureate approval for his education plan at Copenhagen Consensus
Peter Orazem, a University Professor of economics at ISU, authored four of the top 15 strategies cited by a panel of leading economists, including four Nobel laureates, at the global Copenhagen Consensus 2012 last month. Orazem's recommendations were on how to improve education in the developing world. The panel was charged with answering the question, "If you had $75 billion to spend over the next four years and your goal was to advance human welfare, how could you get the most value for your money?" Dermot Hayes, professor of economics and finance, and Pioneer Chair in Agribusiness at ISU, was recently awarded the Learning Community Champion Award. The award honors an individual who has significantly contributed to the advancement of learning communities at Iowa State University. Hayes was one of three to receive the award.
Hayes has been at the forefront of promoting learning communities through teaching the Econ 101 class, facilitating common reading discussions and through his generous financial support of the Agricultural Business learning community. Every fall, he sponsors a dinner for each of the four Ag Business freshmen learning communities. Hayes gives each learning team the responsibility of planning the event and inviting several of their current professors. Additionally, his support for the program is made known by the enthusiasm he shows when teaching his 101 class. He cares about students and their continued success at Iowa State. His interactions with students support retention efforts and he is commended for his dedication to the success of students.
For the 12th consecutive year, the Learning Communities Awards Committee honored individuals for their extraordinary contributions to learning communities at Iowa State University. Yu Jin graduated from ISU with a Phd in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a position as assistant professor at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, in the School of Economics, Shanghai. The new position will start in September, and his research focus will be on financial economics and macroeconomics.
Hang Qian has graduated from ISU with a PhD in economics in May 2012. He has accepted a position with MathWorks, a company that produces the MATLAB software. He will develop new features in their econometric modeling tools, and maintain their econometric toolbox software.

Dave Swenson was interviewed by Sharon Cohen, a reporter from The Associated Press in Chicago, for a series looking at swing state issues and economies. Swenson gave her a background briefing on major economic and social issues in the state, especially in light of the recovery.
Mike Duffy spoke with Matt Wilde, Waterloo Courier, on beginning farmers. He also spoke with a reporter from the Financial Times on land values.
