  • Annual land value survey reveals historic $6,708 statewide average

    The average Iowa farmland value is estimated to be $6708 per acre, an increase of 32.5% from 2010, according to results of the Iowa Land Value Survey conducted in November. This is the highest percentage increase ever recorded by the Iowa State University annual survey, recently presented by Mike Duffy, ISU economics professor and extension farm management economist, and conductor of the survey.   • Weekly media connections for the Department of Economics
    • Mike Duffy was interviewed by The New York Times, Quad City Times, Sioux City Journal, Successful Farming Magazine, a local CBS television affiliate, and several local radio stations regarding a $20,000 land sale.
    • Duffy spoke with representatives from the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, CNBC, AP, National Public Radio, and Bloomberg News Service on the release and results of the annual Iowa Land Value Survey.
    • Chad Hart spoke with Arthur Sulzberger of the New York Times on crop prices and their impact on marginal land decisions. He also spoke with Scott Kilman of the Wall Street Journal on the factors that shaped the $20,000 per acre land sale in NW Iowa, and with Whitney McFerron of Bloomberg News on the outlook for 2012 crop prices.
    • Hart spoke with Kathleen Masterson of Iowa Public Radio on farm size and efficiency; Ed Clark of the Farm Journal on the USDA’s latest crop supply and demand report; Matt Wilde of the Waterloo Courier on crop prospects for 2012; and Mark Dorenkamp of KGLO radio on crop marketing and prices in 2012.
    • Dave Swenson was interviewed today by Scott Horsley, National Public Radio White House correspondent, on the Iowa economy and how much of a factor it might be for the caucuses.
    • Swenson spoke with Hal Weitzman of the Financial Times, on the Quad Cities and overall eastern Iowa economy.
    • He also participated in a Skype interview on a weekly Minnesota PBS television program (KSMQ) that focuses on markets and the economy, talking about buy-local initiatives in Southern Minnesota and northern Iowa.

  • DEADLINE 1/17/12: 2012-2013 IAF Fellowship Deadline

    IAF Fellowships support dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean undertaken by students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy in a university in the United States. Fellows must be U.S. citizens or citizens of the independent Latin American countries. Proficiency in the language(s) appropriate to the research proposal is required.

  • Course Announcement: Responsible Conduct of Research 565A - Meets NSF and NIH Training Requirements

    Introduction to the responsible conduct of research (RCR), including: research misconduct, conflicts of interest, data ownership and sharing, data management and security, mentor and trainee responsibilities, collaborative research, authorship practices, confidentiality, peer review, working with industry, the federal regulatory environment, and research involving humans and animal subjects.

    This course is approved to meet NSF and NIH requirements for RCR training for graduate students supported on NSF and certain NIH funds. The NSF requirements are in effect for proposals and renewals submitted after January 4, 2010.   • FEEM, Senior Researcher Position in Climate and Energy Economics

    FEEM, a leading research institute on sustainable development (www.feem.it) is looking to recruit a motivated and talented senior researcher to cover an open position within the Climate Change and Sustainable Development Research Programme.

    The applicant would join a team that is engaged in analysing a wide range of issues about climate and energy economics, such as economic modelling of climate and energy policies, technological progress in the context of energy technologies, socio-economic drivers of energy demand in developing economies, the relation between energy and development, the functioning of global energy markets etc.

    The candidate will be involved in the integrated assessment modeling group and focus part of her/his research on the quantitative assessment of climate impacts and policies.

    Requirements

    Candidates should have a Ph.D. in economics, or in energy engineering/mathematics/physics coupled with a solid economic background, and experience in applied research on environment and energy issues.

    The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different nationalities, and have the chance to present scientific papers at several conferences and workshops. Parts of the activities are realized in the context of European research projects. FEEM offers a truly interdisciplinary workplace, with strong ties with a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental research and in particular on the analysis of climate change issues.

    The successful candidate is expected to begin his/her assignment in 2012. The appointment period can be up to 3 years, with an evaluation after the first one. Gross salary is competitive and will be based on qualification and experience. Duties will be carried out at the FEEM premises either in Milan or Venice, Italy.
