  • New Lectern Computers

    Brent Moore, Oleksandr Zhylyevskyy

Some of you may have noticed new computer equipment in Heady Hall classrooms and might be wondering what it is for. Over the winter break, central IT has installed lectern computers in four Heady Hall classrooms: 160, 162, 272, and 274. These computers are connected to multimedia projectors on the ceiling and may be used in place of a laptop for classroom presentations and other activities. USB ports to connect USB drives, presentation pointers, etc. to the lectern computers are located on the left side and bottom of the monitor. This new installation does not affect your ability to use a laptop if you wish to continue doing so.

The lectern computers in Heady Hall are the very first four installed by central IT as part of a larger campus-wide project. It is a network-based thin client - server system, similar to the one deployed by the Department last year. When you log in on the lectern computer, you actually log in to a virtual machine running on a central server; and your session is wiped clean after you log off. The system is functional but is still at an experimental stage, and you may occasionally experience slow performance, as central IT is reconfiguring the system. Since the lectern computers have been installed by central IT and the underlying thin client - server infrastructure is beyond the Department's immediate control, please direct any requests regarding software and other related suggestions to central IT at vdi@iastate.edu.
